Bastillia was the oldest of the Five Cities, predating and outlasting even fabled Nerath, the empire in which it participated for a time. Originally founded by an alliance of eladrin and elves who had migrated from the Feywild, Bastillia eventually came to incorporate members of all of the civilized races before becoming a part of the empire of Nerath.
The influence of Bastillia’s founders was felt throughout the city’s history, and Bastillians maintained a reputation as producing the finest wizards and rangers of any of the Five Cities. Many of the finest minds in the region were shaped at Bastillia’s centers of education. Although many gods were worshipped in Bastillia, the most prominent temples were those of Corellon, and Sehanine and Ioun.
Bastillia was the first of the Five Cities to encounter the Demonruck (originally identified by Bastillian scholars as “the cynocephali”), and it was consequently the first city to fall. Although Bastillia requested aid from Archport, Eolia, Runedar and Tostlin, both the Bastillians and their allies vastly underestimated the numbers and determination of the gnoll invaders; the reinforcements sent were insufficient to the task and subsequently overwhelmed. As it became apparent that the forces of the Demonruck had won their way into the core of Bastillia, the city’s high mages enacted a group ritual of unprecedented power that transported vast portions of the city and the majority of its population into the relative safety of the Feywild. Those not transported were left to fend for themselves, and horrific losses were suffered as they attempted to flee ahead of the Demonruck’s advance.
The refugees of Bastillia’s fall spread out across the land, and many of them eventually made their way to Tostlin, from which they embarked across the ocean to the far shore where Sojourn was finally founded.
