Salutation Hall is a boarding house owned by Nasami Gil in the city of Sojourn. Built of local timber in the longhouse style, it caters mainly to newly arrived refugees from the Five Cities and more established residents who are simply down on their luck. The hall is crowded and lacking in privacy, but is clean and well organized, and with a bed costing of 2 silver pieces per night “no matter how many bodies share it”, those with scant resources often find it too tempting an offer to pass.
Other than a warm bed, Salutation Hall has little to offer in the way of services. Meals are seldom served, and they tend to be mediocre when they are, as Nasami isn’t much of a cook and has no wish to shell out the coin to hire someone more talented. Bathing rooms are provided, with men’s and women’s bathing areas separated from one another by a wall of cloth, but the lines for a bath tend to be long.
The only entertainment comes twice a month in the form of pugilism tournaments (or “fight nights”, as they are more commonly known). Only lodgers are permitted to participate, but anyone can watch if they pay the 1 silver admission fee. The night’s champion is awarded 5 gold, which seems a small compensation for the broken noses and lost teeth the evening inevitably generates. Local wisdom contends that the bragging rights earned by an evening’s winner is worth at least as much as the cash prize, if not more.
